@BallStateSports: Cardinals in the Crowd (Oct. 25)

BY MAX DENARI | BALL STATE SPORTS LINK

Last week was highlighted by Homecoming 2016 and a pivotal Mid-American Conference football matchup between Ball State and Akron.

Unfortunately the Cardinals fell 35-25 and now have over a week to prepare for nationally ranked Western Michigan in Muncie Nov.1.

Women’s volleyball notched a road win at Bowling Green, field hockey defeated Missouri State and men’s golf found themselves atop the leaderboard at Old Dominion.

Here’s a look at the Cardinals you need to know about:

Sophomore James Gilbert continued his poised performances on the field last Saturday against Akron. Despite the 35-25 loss, Gilbert managed to rush for 133 yards with 24 carries as well as grabbing one touchdown in the process.

Gilbert is 13 yards away from 1,000 yards on the season and also has 11 touchdowns. Gilbert has moved up to the third spot in total rushing yards in the nation, with 987 yards.

Freshman forward Sam Kambol scored a fantastic match-winning goal against Kent State in the first half of extra time last Sunday. The Cardinals defeated the Golden Flashes 2-1, bringing Ball State to (8-1-1) overall in MAC play.

Sunday’s goal was not something uncommon for Kambol, as she currently has five goals and one assist overall this season.

stat_handler-1.aspx.jpeg Sydnee VanBeek: Volleyball

Freshman Sydnee VanBeek had an all-around performance last Friday against Bowling Green. Within the Cardinals 3-0 sweep of the Falcons, VanBeek recorded seven kills, six blocks and one ace.

VanBeek was at the forefront of handing the MAC’s top attacking team their lowest rate of success so far this season. VanBeek has a total of 54 kills, 23 blocks and four aces this season.

stat_handler.aspx.jpeg Hannah Bohn: Field Hockey

Redshirt freshman Hannah Bohn scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory against Missouri State last Friday. Bohn only took two shots Friday, with both being on target, while overall for the season she has four shots and two goals.

Bohn has a .400 shot percentage for the season, which is the second-most prolific on the team. The Cardinals face their next and last opponent for the regular season, Central Michigan, Friday at 2 p.m.

Wiseman,Timothy16_s080_011.jpg Timothy Wiseman: Men’s Golf

Sophomore Timothy Wiseman finished a career best eighth individually Tuesday at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate.

Ball State as a team finished fourth with a total score of 853 (+1) for the event. All five Ball State golfers finished in the Top 30 out of a field of 93.

The Cardinals will finish out their fall season in the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic in Lahaina, Hawai’i, Nov. 4-6.

A complete schedule of this week’s event is available at www.ballstatesports.com.

This week is highlighted by the end of both the soccer and field hockey regular seasons. Soccer faces Miami (OH) at Briner Sports Complex, Thursday at 3 p.m. and look to capture a second straight MAC regular season title.  The Cardinals will host a Sunday MAC Tournament quarterfinal contest in Muncie and televised by Ball State Sports Link on ESPN3.
