#SLFeatured: Minnesota Twins Sign Kevin Marnon

Another former Ball State baseball player is getting the chance to continue his playing career in the highest levels of professional baseball. Kevin Marnon agreed to terms with the Minnesota Twins July 27.

Marnon was one of Ball State’s top pitchers in both 2016 and 2017. This past spring, the lefty made a team-high 13 starts on the mound and led the team in wins (6) and innings pitched (70.2). He struck out a season-high eight batters in the win at Buffalo on April 21. Marnon was moved to the bullpen late in the season and thrived there. The native of Shelby Township, Michigan, tossed 3.2 innings of relief, struck out four batters and did not allow a hit to earn the win at Central Michigan on May 20.

“Without the support from my coaches and teammates, none of this would be possible,” Marnon said.

He is reporting to Minnesota’s rookie league team in Florida on Sunday.

Marnon spent the previous month playing for the Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers in the United Shore Baseball League (USBL). He recorded a win and three saves in 15 appearances with the Beavers. Marnon allowed an earned run just twice in his stint in the USBL.

“I’m so happy to see Kevin’s hard work pay off, and now he gets his chance to show what he can do against some of the best up-and-coming players in professional baseball,” Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said.

Marnon is the second Cardinal to sign a free agent deal this summer. Last month, infielder Alex Maloney signed with the Chicago White Sox. Maloney is currently playing on the White Sox’s Arizona Rookie League squad.

Ball State concluded the 2017 season with a 30-28 overall record and 14-10 mark in the MAC. This was the fifth straight year the Cardinals reached the 30-win plateau.
