The nationally recognized Ball State Sports Link program earned the Emmy for Sports Documentary at the 54th Annual Central Great Lakes Emmy Awards. Recent graduates Faith Denig and Peyton Monnell earned the award for their documentary Thy Will Be Done: The Trey Uetrecht Story.
The inspirational story of Uetrecht documents his survival of a horrific car accident and journey back to the Ball State Football field. After premiering on Ball State PBS in May 2022, the film also earned a second place award for Video Sports Story Long Form at the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts. The Emmy marks the seventh professional Emmy Sports Link students have won.
Sports Link students also earned recognition at the 2023 Sports Video Group College Sports Media Awards for the year’s work on Sports Link Stories. Student producers Tristan Fluhr and Tyler Klimes, and hosts Madison Surface and Hudson French, garnered the top prize for Outstanding Program Series in the Collegiate Student division for their work on the show. This is the 14th SVG College Sports Media Award earned by Sports Link students.
Rounding out the past month of recognitions, Sports Link students also received three Student Production Awards from the Central Great Lakes Chapter of National Association of Television Arts and Sciences. Students won awards for College Sports Story: Ball State Volleyball: Angelo’s Mandilaris, College Sports Program: Sports Link Stories, and College Live Sporting Event: Ball State Basketball vs. Evansville. Overall, SL students have won 36 Student Production Awards since 2009.
